Vocabulary 43 - B1

Herbert was excited. He had a new plan to make money! "Margot, I'm going to experiment with my tomato plants!" he announced.

Margot looked up from her book. "Oh? What kind of experiment, Herbert?" she asked.

"I'm going to use this special fertilizer. The man at the Corner Shop said it makes tomatoes grow twice as big! He did warn me to be careful."

"Careful how?" Margot was already worried.

"Well, he said if you use too much, the tomatoes might... well, he didn't say exactly. But he looked serious. He did warn me," Herbert replied, grabbing the fertilizer.

Margot sighed. "Just... be careful, Herbert. And don't get any on your new suit."

Later that day, Brian found Herbert in the garden. Herbert was pouring a large amount of fertilizer onto one tomato plant.

"Dad, that looks like a lot," Brian observed. "Are you sure you should use so much?"

"Nonsense, Brian!" Herbert waved his hand dismissively. "This fertilizer is special. We need big tomatoes to win the Oakhaven Garden Competition. The man said he wanted to warn everyone, but I think it's fine.

The next morning, Margot went to check on the garden. She gasped. The tomato plant was huge! It was growing right over the garden edge!

"Herbert!" she shouted. "Come quickly!"

Herbert shuffled outside, still in his pajamas. He stared at the giant tomato plant. It was covered in tomatoes the size of basketballs.

"Wow," Herbert said, his mouth open. "Maybe I should have gone a little slow on the fertilizer."

Suddenly, one of the giant tomatoes fell off the plant and landed with a loud THUMP, crushing Herbert's new suit which was drying on the line.

Margot put her hand on her head. "I tried to warn you."

Herbert looked at his ruined suit, then at the enormous tomato plant. "Okay, maybe a little slow would have been better. And maybe I should have listened about the edge."

Brian tried to hide a smile. He knew this was one experiment that wouldn't be repeated.
