Herbert sat in his armchair, flipping through channels. Margot entered the living room, holding a dusty photo album.

Margot: "Herbert, look at this! It's a picture of your ancestor, great-grandpa Silas."

Herbert glanced at the photo, a man with a stern face and a long beard. "He looks like he never smiled. Probably a very shallow man."

Margot: "Herbert! That's your family. Be respectful. Though, I do remember Grandma saying he was always involved in some sort of disagreement with the neighbors about property lines."

Herbert: "Property lines? Sounds deadly boring. Pass me the remote, will you?"

Margot sighed and handed him the remote. "This is what I mean by being awkward. Try to engage a little, I'm trying to show you your family history."

Later, Brian walked in, slamming his skateboard down.

Brian: "Dad, can I borrow twenty dollars?"

Herbert: "Twenty dollars? What for? You know money doesn't grow on trees!"

Brian: "There's this new video game coming out. All my friends are getting it."

Margot: "Brian, you need to start saving your allowance. We talked about this."

Brian: "But Mom, it's only twenty dollars! Please?"

Herbert, without looking up from the TV: "Fine, fine. But do your chores this weekend!"

Brian: "Thanks, Dad! You're the best!" He snatched the money and ran out the door.

Margot: "Herbert! You shouldn't just give him money like that. He needs to learn responsibility."

Herbert: "Ah, he's a good kid. Besides, it keeps him out of my hair."
