Vocabulary 2 - B2

Herbert walked into the kitchen, his back aching from a morning spent "tidying" the garage (mostly moving things from one pile to another). Margot was at the stove.

"Morning, dear," Herbert mumbled. "Anything good cooking?"

Margot sighed. "Just trying to make a healthy breakfast. I feel like we've been eating too many donuts lately."

Herbert feigned offense. "A donut a day keeps the doctor away! Besides," he added, spotting a half-eaten box on the counter, "it looks like you didn't try very hard to avoid them."

Margot gave him a look. "Those were for the school bake sale. And I had exactly one. Now, about getting the garage organized properly..."

Herbert decided to change the subject. "I was thinking... maybe I should invest in that new fishing rod I saw at the Corner Shop. Then we'd be even on the donut expenditure!"

Margot stirred the pot vigorously. "That's not even remotely the same thing, Herbert. And I need you to pause your 'investment' ideas until we've paid off the car."

He slumped into a chair. "Fine, fine. No fishing rod. But can't I just… look at it?"

Later that day, Brian was skateboarding in the park when he saw Laura sitting on a bench, reading a thick book.

"Hey, Laura," Brian called out, attempting a kickflip (and failing).

Laura looked up, putting her finger in the book to mark her place. "Brian. Be careful with your skateboard."

"I always am," Brian said, completely unconvincingly. "What are you reading?"

"It's about environmental conservation," Laura said. "I feel like we need to do more to protect Oakhaven Park."

Brian shrugged. "It's just a park."

"Exactly! We need to try to keep it that way!" Laura exclaimed. "Maybe you could help me pick up litter this weekend? We could pause your skateboarding for an hour."

Brian's face fell. "Can't. Got plans. Big plans." He immediately regretted not having a better excuse.

Laura raised an eyebrow. "Oh? What kind of plans? Involving leaving a trail of empty snack wrappers back to your house?"

Brian gulped. "Okay, maybe I can try to find some time. But we're not even yet. You owe me for all the times you’ve told mom about my video game spending."

"We are SO not even," Laura muttered, returning to her book.
