Vocabulary 4 - B2

Herbert sighed, pushing a stack of papers to the side. "This safety inspection process is never-ending," he grumbled. "It's one thing after another."

Margot walked into Herbert's makeshift home office, a cup of tea in hand. "Well, someone has to do it. Think of it as keeping everyone at Oakhaven Industries safe. Besides, it gets you out of the house."

Herbert took a large gulp of tea. "It's all about reaching a certain safety level. But it's hard when people don't follow the rules. They get too close to the machinery."

Margot chuckled. "Speaking of close, did you remember to take the trash out? The bin is overflowing."

Herbert groaned. "That's not in my job description. I'm thinking of changing the term of my employment. Maybe I'll be a professional donut taster."

Margot raised an eyebrow. "And who would pay you for that?"

Herbert shrugged. "Someone will see the value, I just need to get that idea in line."

Later that day, Brian was trying to close the shed, but it was stuck. He called out to his sister, Laura.

“Laura, can you give me a hand? This door won’t budge!”

Laura walked over, saxophone case in hand. “What’s the process you’re using to close it?”

“The usual level: pushing really hard!”

Laura sighed. “Maybe try lifting it slightly first. Sometimes the ground shifts.”

Brian did as she said, and the door slid shut. “Huh. Guess you were right.”

Laura smiled. “It’s all about finding the right approach.” She paused. “Although, I wish I could change the term paper assignment for history. This essay is dreadful.”

Brian grimaced. “Tell me about it. I’m way off the line for the essay about Oakhaven Elementary.”

Laura patted him on the shoulder. “We'll get through it. Now, I have to practice my saxophone.”
