Vocabulary 69 - B2

Herbert sat at the kitchen table, a half-eaten donut in his hand. Margot was trying to illustrate to Brian the importance of cleaning his room.

"It's like this, Brian," Margot said, holding up a dust bunny. "If you implement a system, like putting your toys away after you play, it won't get this bad."

Brian rolled his eyes. "But Mom, it's my room. I should be able to leave my stuff wherever I want."

Herbert, without looking up from his donut, chimed in, "Margot, are you trying to command the boy? Leave him be. It’s a lost cause."

Margot sighed. "It's not about commanding, Herbert! It's about teaching him responsibility. You should show some faith in his ability to learn."

Herbert shrugged. "Faith? In Brian cleaning his room? Well, I have a faith in donut's taste! The way he leaves his stuff, it's implying he likes living in a dump."

Brian grinned, knowing he had successfully distracted them both from the topic of his messy room. He knew his dad agreed with him, even if his mom tried to implement some rules. "Maybe I will clean it later."

Margot gave Herbert a pointed look. "See? Now he is saying that he will clean. If you just wait, he would do it. Your comments imply that he is not capable of doing it by himself"

"Alright, Alright. But when you command someone, you never know when it is time to stop!" Herbert finished his donut, already thinking about a nap. He knew Margot would clean up eventually anyway. He just had to maintain his faith.

Margot grabbed the newspaper and started to illustrate to Brian how you can use it to clean the windows.
