Herbert sat in his armchair, remote in hand. "Margot, I perceive a distinct lack of snacks," he announced.

Margot, busy sorting laundry, sighed. "Herbert, you had a whole donut an hour ago. Maybe some fruit would be better?" She paused. "Besides, the town council is discussing welfare programs today, maybe we should watch and see what that means for Oakhaven."

Herbert groaned. "Welfare? Sounds boring. What about the expansion of my waistline? That's a far more pressing issue. This armchair is starting to feel a bit snug."

Margot rolled her eyes. "It's called gaining weight, Herbert. And maybe a little exposure to local politics would do you some good. You might actually learn something about how the town works."

"I already know how it works," Herbert mumbled, flipping through channels. "They talk, I nap."

Later that day, Brian came home from school, covered in mud. "Mom, Dad, you won't believe what happened!"

Margot examined Brian's mud-caked clothes. "Let me guess, another 'science experiment' gone wrong?"

Brian grinned sheepishly. "Well, sort of. We were trying to alter the path of the stream in the park… it was supposed to create a new waterfall!"

Herbert, who had momentarily looked up from the TV, chuckled. "Sounds like something I would've done at his age. As long as you didn't flood Mrs. Higgins' prize-winning petunias."

"Nope!" Brian said. "Just made a giant mud pit. Mrs. Higgins was… not thrilled."

Margot shook her head. "Alright, young man. Straight to the shower. And then you're helping me weed the garden."

Brian groaned, but trudged off, leaving a trail of mud in his wake. Herbert, back to his remote, muttered, "At least it wasn't my armchair that got muddy."
