Herbert sat in his favorite armchair, remote in hand. Margot walked in, holding a stack of papers.

"Herbert, have you seen the latest editorial in the Oakhaven Gazette?" Margot asked, placing the papers on the coffee table.

Herbert grunted. "Gazette? Is that edible? If not, I'm not interested."

Margot sighed. "It's about the ongoing roadwork on Elm Street. People are very upset."

"Roadwork? Sounds like someone else's problem," Herbert replied, switching channels.

Brian rushed in, tripping over the rug. "Dad, Laura says she's found the cure for boredom!"

Herbert raised an eyebrow. "A cure? Sounds suspicious. Probably involves chores."

Laura entered, holding two seemingly identical jars filled with dirt and small plants.

"These are control samples for my soil experiment!" Laura announced with enthusiasm. "One gets regular water, the other gets water with my special plant food!"

Brian grabbed the remote from Herbert. "Let's watch a movie, Dad! Forget the dirt."

Herbert frowned. "Hey! I was watching that cooking show!"

Margot picked up the editorial. "Maybe a little less TV and a little more community involvement would do you both some good."

"But Mom, the movie is about food!" Brian exclaimed. "It practically is community involvement because we're all watching it together!"

Herbert nodded in agreement. "See, Margot? We're practically model citizens!"

Margot just shook her head, smiling slightly. She knew there was no arguing with them.
