Herbert sat on the sofa, covered in a fluffy blanket. He was watching an auction on TV, even though Margot had told him they couldn't buy anything.

"Look at this, Margot!" he exclaimed. "A solid gold donut!" Margot sighed, entering from the kitchen.

"Herbert, we need a new washing machine, not a golden donut. Be optimistic about practical things, not silly trinkets."

Brian walked in, holding a slightly bent skateboard. "Dad, can you fix this? You're good at mechanical stuff, right?"

Herbert chuckled. "Son, I'm a safety inspector! That's totally different from being artistic and building robots!" He paused, then his eyes twinkled. "But... maybe I could use some duct tape and… well, a little bit of hope."

Margot rolled her eyes but smiled slightly. "Oh, Herbert. You'll try anything, won't you?"

Later, Brian was skating (somewhat successfully) on his duct-taped board, while Herbert was back on the sofa, still glued to the auction. He secretly hoped the golden donut would reappear.
