Margot looked up from her mending. "Well, maybe if you helped with the housework sometimes, instead of... well, never, you wouldn't feel so bad."

Herbert ignored her. "I saw old Mrs. Henderson today. She was collecting donations for the community garden. Seemed a bit desperate."

"That's nice of her. Oakhaven needs a community garden. It's good for everyone."

"Good? It's super good! Free vegetables!"

Margot raised an eyebrow. "Herbert, are you thinking of volunteering?"

Herbert chuckled. "Volunteering? No, no. I was thinking maybe a small donation...to secure... a prime planting spot. Purely for sustainable self-sufficiency, you understand."

Margot sighed. "You are unbelievable."

Later that day, Laura found Herbert trying to move a particularly large pumpkin seedling into the garden bed. Mrs. Henderson looked on, her expression less than sympathetic.

"Dad, are you sure you're supposed to plant that here? It looks like Mrs. Gable's space,"

Herbert winked. "A little 'oops' never hurt anyone, Laura. Plus, think of the pumpkin pie! A truly sustainable dessert!"

Laura shook her head. "Dad, this isn't right. You should be more sympathetic to the other gardeners. They worked hard for their spaces."

Herbert puffed out his chest. "But...pumpkin pie! And this seedling is super!"

"Maybe we should make a bigger donation to the garden instead of trying to steal someone's spot?", Laura suggested.

Herbert considered this. "Hmm... a bigger donation... gets us... even more pie?" He scratched his chin broadly.

Margot walked over. "Herbert, put the pumpkin down. Now. And Laura, dear, can you help me find Mrs. Henderson? I think we have a more sustainable solution to this problem."
