Vocabulary 50 - C1

The morning sun glinted off the calm waters of Oakhaven bay.
Herbert Walker was trying to enjoy his fishing, or rather, attempting to not get his line tangled for the tenth time.
Margot, sitting beside him on a folding chair, sighed softly.
"Honestly, Herbert, you'd think after all these years..."
Herbert grunted. "Easy for you to say, Margot. You're just reading your book."

Suddenly, Brian's voice, high-pitched and panicked, echoed from the nearby pier.
"Dad! Mom! I'm in distress!"

Herbert leaped to his feet, nearly tripping over his tackle box. "What is it now?"
Margot squinted. "Brian? What's wrong?"
Brian pointed dramatically towards a flock of seagulls circling above a discarded bag of chips.
"They stole my skateboard! I mean, they're trying to! And they're laughing!"

Herbert groaned. "Seagulls? Brian, they want your chips, not your skateboard. Just… flee, quickly."
Brian, unconvinced, made a half-hearted attempt to shoo the birds away, then decided discretion was the better part of valor.
He ran back towards the park, leaving a trail of half-eaten crisps in his wake.

Margot shook her head. "Sometimes, I think he enjoys causing us this much stress."
Herbert chuckled, sitting back down. "Ah, he's a good kid. Just… a little dramatic. Speaking of dramatic, did you see Mrs. Henderson's new hat at church? It was a grave fashion violation."

Margot frowned. "Herbert! That's not very nice."
Herbert shrugged. "Well, it's true! It looked like something you'd find in a grave. Anyway, at least it's not seagulls stealing skateboards."
He cast his line again, sending the hook soaring out over the still bay. This time, hopefully, towards a fish and not another tangle.
Margot smiled faintly, returning to her book, the sound of the gulls fading slightly into the background.
