Vocabulary 67 - C1

Herbert was meticulously planning his weekend. "This Saturday," he declared to Margot, his voice brimming with enthusiasm, "we are going on a family picnic!"

Margot, ever the pragmatist, raised an eyebrow. "A picnic, Herbert? Have you checked the weather forecast? And where exactly are we going? You know Brian will want to coordinate the skateboarding tricks with his friend, so he will want a place with specific rails."

"Relax, my dear," Herbert chuckled, waving his hand dismissively. "I have it all figured out. Oakhaven Park. I saw a perfect spot near the old oak tree. Plenty of space for Brian to perform, and you will not find a better view for miles."

Saturday arrived, and the Walker family piled into their car. Herbert, leading the way with unwavering confidence, drove straight to Oakhaven Park. However, the "perfect spot" he envisioned turned out to be anything but. Instead of a picturesque meadow, they found themselves staring at a rather large, muddy pit.

"Herbert!" Margot exclaimed, her voice a mix of exasperation and amusement. "What is this? A sinkhole?"

Herbert stammered, "I… I don’t understand. It wasn’t here last week! I swear!" Brian, meanwhile, was peering into the pit with fascination. "Cool! Can I throw rocks in it?"

Margot sighed. "Of course you can, Brian. While your father tries to explain how he managed to lead us to the edge of an abyss. Herbert, how can you still call this a picnic? We need to coordinate a new plan!"

Herbert, defeated but not entirely deterred, suggested, "Alright, alright. Plan B. We'll go to The Dog & Duck. They have that lovely beer garden, and I can even persuade the bartender to craft an elaborate sundae for us!"

Margot considered this for a moment, weighing the pros and cons. "Okay, but if you promise to supervise Brian and keep him away from the dartboard."

"Deal!" Herbert beamed, clapping his hands together. He turned to Brian, winking. "Accordingly, young man, to the pub we go!"

As they walked towards the pub, a rather satisfied smile crept across Margot’s face. Perhaps a beer garden picnic wasn’t so bad after all. Besides, it was always entertaining to watch Herbert try to explain himself out of another mess. And, it was easier than making a homemade picnic. A true win in Margot's books.

At the pub, Laura was chatting with her companion , Daisy. They had just finished their volunteer shift at the local library and were looking to unwind.

"I can't believe how many people still use the library," Laura said, sipping her lemonade. "It's so important to have access to free books and resources."

Daisy nodded enthusiastically. "Exactly! And Mrs. Higgins was so excited about the new biography of Marie Curie. She had been waiting for weeks!"

As they continued to chat, they noticed Herbert and his family enter the pub. "Oh look, it's the Walkers!" Daisy exclaimed. "Herbert looks like he's about to coordinate another one of his schemes!"

Laura laughed. "You know him too well. Let's just hope he doesn't end up in the pit again, metaphorically speaking."

"I think he needs a companion to guide him. That man is like a boat with no anchor," Daisy said smiling at Laura.

Herbert, oblivious to their conversation, was already elaborately describing his near-disaster picnic to the bartender, who listened with a mixture of amusement and disbelief. "So, accordingly, you see, we had to improvise!"

Laura and Daisy exchanged a knowing glance and continued their conversation, enjoying the simple pleasure of their friendship and the comical chaos of small-town life.
