Herbert sat in his usual armchair, remote in hand. Margot was attempting to read a book, but the news on TV blared about a minor riot downtown after a failed parliamentary vote regarding… well, Herbert wasn't listening. He was thinking about donuts.

“Herbert, could you please turn that down? I can’t hear myself think,” Margot sighed, adjusting her glasses.

Herbert grumbled, lowering the volume slightly. “Just catching up on current events, love. Important stuff. Affects us all.” He paused. “Though, to be honest, most of it seems a rather strange occurrence, doesn’t it? All that shouting… makes me want a nap.”

Margot shook her head, but smiled faintly. Herbert's ability to simplify complex issues was both infuriating and somewhat endearing.

Later that day, Brian burst into the kitchen. "Mom, I need a note! I think I'm allergic to something at school. My head hurts, my stomach hurts..."

Margot felt his forehead. "No fever. What did you eat?"

"Nothing! Just... the usual school lunch." Brian’s voice was suspiciously high-pitched. "Maybe I need a prescription or something?"

Margot raised an eyebrow. "A prescription for a sudden, mysterious ailment that conveniently appears before a math test? I think not. Try drinking some water and doing your homework."

Brian slumped. "Fine. But if I vanish from existence during the test, it’s on you."

Herbert, who had wandered in during this exchange, chuckled. "He's got your flair for the dramatic, Margot. Though I think vanishing would require more than just avoiding fractions."
