Herbert sat at the table. He looked ill.

Margot asked, "What's wrong, Herbert?"

Herbert sighed. "My boss says if I don't improve everywhere at work, my salary might go down."

Margot said, "Well, you need to try harder!"

Brian walked in. "What's wrong with Dad? Is he going to die?"

Margot said, "Brian! Don't be silly. Your father just needs to work better."

Herbert groaned. "I feel like I need medicine."

Brian said, "Maybe if you pretend to be very, very ill, they will let you stay home."

Margot gave Brian a look. "That is not good advice, Brian!"

Herbert thought for a moment. "Hmm..."

Later, Herbert was at work. He tried to look very sad and ill. He moved very slowly.

His boss said, "Herbert, are you okay?"

Herbert said, "I don't feel so good. I might not be alive for long at this rate."

His boss said, "Just try your best."

Herbert sighed. "It's no use, my salary is doomed."

That evening, Margot and Herbert were watching TV. Brian was playing video games.

Margot said, "So, how was work?"

Herbert said, "Terrible! I am still alive, but just barely. They didn't give me any medicine and my salary is probably going down because I am not working hard everywhere."

Margot shook her head. "You'll be fine, Herbert. You always are."
