Herbert sat at the kitchen table, reading the newspaper. Margot was making breakfast. Brian was trying to sneak out the door with his skateboard.
"Where do you think you're going, young man?" Margot asked, not even looking up from the stove.
Brian sighed. "Just to the park, Mom. All my friends are going."
"On a school day?" Herbert mumbled from behind the newspaper. "That's a strange basis for your plans."
Brian rolled his eyes. "We're doing a project! About… trees!"
Margot raised an eyebrow. "Really? That sounds very deep. But the school property is probably better for tree research, no?"
Brian looked defeated. "Fine. I'll go to school. Except… I feel a little sick."
Herbert lowered his newspaper slightly, donut crumbs visible on his mustache. "Sick, huh? Is there a profit in faking sickness, Brian?"
Brian’s face dropped, he did not reply, and instead grabbed his backpack.

Later that day, Herbert came home from Oakhaven Industries. He smelled donuts. Margot was eating one.
"Where did you get those?" Herbert asked, eyes widening.
"Corner Shop had a sale," Margot said. "I bought them with money I saved from the grocery budget."
Herbert frowned. "But… that was supposed to be for the water bill!"
Margot smiled sweetly. "Relax, Herbert. I invested some of my earnings in a high interest account, so don’t worry."
Herbert groaned. "Sometimes, I think you run this family like a business."
Margot kissed him on the cheek. "Someone has to keep us afloat! Now, do you want a donut?"
