Herbert shuffled into the kitchen, already eyeing the donut box on the counter. Margot was making breakfast.
"Morning, love," he mumbled. "Anything exciting planned today?"
Margot sighed. "Just trying to survive. Brian thought it would be funny to put glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling last night. Now I have to get them off."

Herbert chuckled. "Sounds like Brian. Say, is there a slice of that apple pie left from yesterday?"

Later, Brian burst into the kitchen, skateboard in hand.
"Mom, can I go to the park?" he asked, grabbing an apple.

Margot pointed a spatula at him. "After you help me with the stars. It's going to be a horror removing them."

Herbert, attempting to sneak a second donut, froze.
"Actually, Brian," he said quickly, "I need your help with something important at Oakhaven Industries. Safety inspection stuff."

Brian looked suspiciously at his dad, then at the half-eaten donut Herbert was trying to hide. "What kind of safety stuff?"

Herbert, thinking fast, replied, "Uh, prayer for safety! We need to pray that the machines are safe to use. And it needs to be done inside of a cottage, for good luck."

Margot rolled her eyes. "There is no cottage at Oakhaven Industries, Herbert. Stop trying to get out of chores. And that's my apple pie!"

Brian smirked. "Nice try, Dad."

Herbert groaned. This get-out-of-chores scheme had definitely backfired.
