Herbert slumped onto the sofa, remote in hand. "Margot," he called out, "I think I've discovered a correlation between daytime television and the sudden urge to buy questionable exercise equipment."

Margot, emerged from her home office, spectacles perched on her nose. "Herbert, that's not a scientific discovery. It's called marketing. And please don't tell me you're thinking of ordering that vibrating belt again."

Herbert sighed dramatically. "But think of the possibilities! I could finally fit into those jeans from 1998! Plus, the infomercial said it's all logic and proven science."

Margot raised an eyebrow. "The same infomercial that claimed you could pay in four easy installments of $29.99? I think I'll stick to my yoga, thank you very much."

Brian walked into the room, skateboarding gear in tow. "Hey, Mom, can you sign this permission slip? It's for a field trip to the historical society."

Margot took the slip. "Historical society? That sounds? surprisingly educational for you, Brian."

Brian shrugged. "Yeah, well, they said there's a demonstration of blacksmithing. I want to see how they craft those swords."

Herbert perked up. "Swords, you say? Now there's an investment opportunity! We could start a medieval-themed dog walking service!"

Margot rolled her eyes. "Herbert, no. Brian, I'll sign your slip. Just try to learn something besides sword-making techniques."

Later that evening, at dinner, Herbert was unusually quiet. Margot noticed.

"Something on your mind, dear?" she asked.

Herbert cleared his throat. "Well, I may have accidentally triggered a fire alarm at Oakhaven Industries today."

Margot put down her fork. "How, precisely, did you manage that?"

"It's a long story involving a donut, a smoke detector, and a gross miscalculation of the administrative consequences."
