Herbert slumped onto the park bench, defeated. "I thought this would be easy," he sighed, staring at the oddly shaped piece of wood in his lap.
Margot sat beside him, patiently observing. "Well, you did decide to carve a swan out of that old tree stump. What did you expect?"
Herbert attempted to carve the wood a bit more forcefully. It was not working. 'The YouTube video made it look so simple!"
Brian skated up, stopping abruptly. "Whatcha doing, Dad? Trying to make a bird? Looks more like a�?� a potato."
Herbert glared at Brian. "I'm trying to initiate a new hobby! It's relaxing!"
Brian snorted. "Relaxing? You look like you're about to have a vein drain all the blood from your head."
Margot chuckled. "He's right, Herbert. Maybe start with something simpler. A block?"
Herbert ignored Margot, still wrestling with the wood. "I just need to get a consensus on where the neck should be!"
Brian stared at the misshapen lump. "I think the consensus is that it doesn't *have* a neck."
Herbert grumbled and threw the carving onto the bench. "Maybe I should have started with something easier. Like whittling. Or competitive napping."
Margot picked up the wood, examining it. "It's not bad, Herbert. It just needs�?� refinement. And maybe we should bare the trunk, so we have a better shape to work with.
Brian grabbed his skateboard. "I'm going to go get an ice cream, Dad. Maybe that will give you some inspiration. The Corner Shop has those new double-chocolate ones!"
Herbert perked up immediately. "Double-chocolate? Maybe this swan can wait."
Later that evening, Herbert sat on the couch, the TV remote in hand. The half-bare wood lay forgotten on the coffee table.
