Herbert was feeling a powerful hunger. He'd skipped breakfast to try and sell encyclopedias door-to-door, a get-rich-quick scheme Margot had immediately dismissed. Now, staring into the fridge, he saw only disappointment.

"Margot!" he called. "Is there anything to eat? I?Tm starving!"

Margot entered the kitchen, wiping her hands on a dish towel. "Herbert, you know I went to the Corner Shop this morning. I thought you were going to be out selling encyclopedias all day?"

"It didn't go well," Herbert admitted. "People just slammed the door. One lady thought I was trying to sell her a fossil! Apparently, encyclopedias are old news. Anyway, my stomach thinks my throat is cut."

Brian walked in, carrying his textbook. "Hey, Dad. You look like you?Tve seen a ghost."

"Worse, Brian, I?Tm hungry. Your mother only bought health food!"

Margot sighed. "I did buy some cookies, Herbert. But only one. They're permanently on the top shelf, to encourage you to eat something healthier first."

Herbert groaned. "One cookie? That's torture! Maybe I should become a novelist. I could write a book about the agony of healthy eating!"

Brian chuckled. "I think you need to write a book about actually working, Dad."

Margot smirked. "I am sure it would be a bestseller, maybe then you would eat a real lunch."

Herbert opened the fridge again, eyeing a lone carrot stick with deep suspicion. "Fine. But I?Tm blaming you both when I?Tm too weak to change the channel."
